Overview Of Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara

The Maruti Grand Vitara is the car that finally got Maruti Suzuki taken seriously in the mid-size SUV segment. Launched in September 2022 through the Nexa network, it arrived with something no rival could match at the price: a genuine strong hybrid powertrain, and the option of all-wheel drive.

Maruti Grand Vitara price starts at ₹10.77 lakh and extends to ₹19.72 lakh ex-showroom, spread across petrol, CNG and strong hybrid powertrains in Sigma, Delta, Zeta, Alpha and Alpha+ trims.

The headline number is efficiency. The Maruti Grand Vitara hybrid claims 27.97 kmpl, and owners routinely report 22–23 kmpl in city driving — figures that belong to a hatchback, delivered by a 4.3-metre SUV. Add 210 mm ground clearance, a panoramic sunroof and Nexa's showroom experience, and the appeal is obvious.

Where buyers should look carefully is crash safety. The Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara has not been tested by any NCAP body, which puts it in a different position from several rivals. That section is covered honestly below.

Best for: High-mileage commuters · Families · Buyers wanting hybrid economy · Occasional soft-roading (AWD)

The Grand Vitara is the sensible choice in a segment full of flashier options. It doesn't have the sharpest styling or the punchiest engine, but the strong hybrid's real-world efficiency is transformative for anyone doing serious kilometres, and the ride quality over broken roads is among the best here. The gaps are an absent ADAS suite, no crash test rating, and a petrol engine that feels merely adequate against turbocharged rivals.

Which Maruti Grand Vitara Variant Should You Buy?

Grand Vitara Sigma - The entry point. Six airbags, ESP and 17-inch steel wheels, but no touchscreen, no alloys, no rear AC vents. Priced attractively; equipped sparsely.

Grand Vitara Delta - Where the car becomes properly usable. 9-inch SmartPlay Pro+ touchscreen, alloy wheels, rear AC vents, cruise control. The volume seller.

Grand Vitara Zeta - Adds a sunroof, wireless charger, connected car tech and auto climate control. The best-value petrol trim.

Grand Vitara Alpha - 360-degree camera, ventilated front seats, HUD, leatherette upholstery, LED projector headlamps. Well-equipped without moving into hybrid pricing.

Grand Vitara Alpha+ / Alpha+ (O) - Panoramic sunroof, powered driver's seat, premium audio. The flagship, and priced accordingly.

Grand Vitara CNG (Delta / Zeta) - 26.6 km/kg with the tank mounted inside the boot rather than under the body. Fuel savings are real; luggage space takes a serious hit.

Grand Vitara Strong Hybrid (Zeta / Alpha / Alpha+) - The reason many people buy this car. Pricier upfront, but the running-cost gap closes fast above 1,500 km a month.

Grand Vitara Alpha AllGrip - The only AWD in the range, available exclusively with the petrol manual. Niche, and genuinely capable for light off-road use.

Best value pick: Grand Vitara Zeta Strong Hybrid e-CVT

Engine, Hybrid System and Driving Feel

Three powertrains, three quite different cars.

The 1.5-litre K15C mild hybrid petrol makes 103 PS and 136.8 Nm. It's smooth and refined but never urgent — adequate in the city, requiring planning for highway overtakes with a full load. The 6-speed torque converter is a better companion than the manual for most buyers.

The strong hybrid is the standout. A 1.5-litre Atkinson-cycle engine paired with an electric motor and a 177V battery, producing 116 PS combined through an e-CVT. It launches on electric power alone, runs in EV mode at low city speeds, and is genuinely quiet. Under hard acceleration the e-CVT does drone, which is the trade-off.

The CNG version makes 88 PS and 121.5 Nm through a 5-speed manual. Noticeably slower, but running cost drops to roughly ₹2.80 per kilometre.

Ride quality is a real strength. The suspension absorbs broken tarmac with a composure most rivals miss, and 210 mm ground clearance means speed breakers and rural roads pose no concern. Handling is safe rather than engaging — this is a comfort-first SUV, and it's honest about that.

Interior, Features and Colours

The Maruti Grand Vitara interior is Maruti's most convincing effort at premium. The layered dashboard, the 9-inch SmartPlay Pro+ touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, ventilated front seats, a head-up display and a panoramic sunroof on Alpha+ all land well. Material quality is a clear step above Arena products, though a Seltos cabin still feels richer in places.

Practical touches matter here: rear AC vents from Delta upward, rear seat recline, a 360-degree camera on Alpha and above, and Suzuki Connect telematics.

Grand Vitara colours: Nexa Blue, Splendid Silver, Arctic White, Grandeur Grey, Opulent Red and Bluish Black, with dual-tone black-roof combinations on higher trims. The Phantom Blaq Edition, launched to mark ten years of Nexa, adds a matte black exterior with blacked-out elements on the top strong hybrid variant — cosmetic only, mechanically unchanged.

Maruti Grand Vitara Safety

Standard on every variant: 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability programme, hill hold assist, ISOFIX mounts, TPMS, rear parking sensors and three-point seatbelts for all occupants. Alpha and above add a 360-degree camera.

Two things buyers should know:

It has not been crash tested. The Grand Vitara has not been assessed by Global NCAP, Bharat NCAP or Euro NCAP. There is no star rating — not a poor one, simply none. Several rivals in this bracket carry published ratings, and if that's your primary filter, that gap is worth weighing.

There is no ADAS suite. Level 2 driver assistance — adaptive cruise, lane keeping, autonomous emergency braking — is unavailable at any price point in this range. Rivals including the Hyundai Creta and Honda Elevate offer it.

Recall note: Maruti issued a voluntary recall covering 39,506 Grand Vitara units manufactured between 9 December 2024 and 29 April 2025. If buying used within that window, verify with a Nexa dealer that the recall work was completed.
