Overview Of Maruti Suzuki Swift

The Maruti Swift has spent nearly two decades being the answer to a question most hatchbacks can't answer: what if a budget car was actually fun to drive? The fourth-generation model, launched in May 2024, kept that reputation intact while adding the efficiency numbers Maruti needed it to have.

Maruti Swift price starts at ₹5.79 lakh and runs to ₹8.84 lakh ex-showroom across 14 variants, covering petrol manual, AMT and factory-fitted S-CNG. It remains a top-10 seller nationally, moving 14,833 units in February 2026 alone.

The big change with this generation was under the bonnet. The old four-cylinder K12 gave way to a new 1.2-litre Z12E three-cylinder — down one cylinder, up significantly on efficiency at a claimed 25.75 kmpl. Purists grumbled about the lost smoothness. Owners noticed the fuel bills.

Where the Maruti Suzuki Swift deserves scrutiny is crash safety, and the picture there is more complicated than most listings admit. That section is worth reading properly before you book.

Best for: Enthusiast-minded city drivers · Young buyers · Highway commuters · CNG users wanting performance

The Swift is still the most engaging small car under ₹9 lakh. Light steering with actual feedback, a slick manual gearbox, and a chassis that rewards you for taking the long way home. Add 24.8 kmpl claimed efficiency and six airbags as standard, and the value case is strong. The compromises are a firm ride over broken roads, a 265-litre boot that's average at best, and three-cylinder vibration at idle that you'll notice at every traffic light.

Which Maruti Swift Variant Should You Buy?

  • Swift LXi - The headline price. Six airbags and ESC are standard now, which makes it far more defensible than base variants used to be. But no touchscreen, no alloys, manual mirrors. Buy it only if the budget genuinely stops here.
  • Swift VXi - The volume seller. Touchscreen, steering controls, keyless entry, all four power windows. This is where most buyers land and few regret it.
  • Swift VXi (O) - Adds a rear camera and a few convenience bits for ₹20,000. Worth it.
  • Swift ZXi - Automatic climate control, 7-inch SmartPlay Pro touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, 6 speakers, leather-wrapped steering. The sweet spot for anyone keeping the car for five-plus years.
  • Swift ZXi+ - LED projector headlamps, 15-inch alloys, push-button start, wireless charger, cruise control, 360-degree camera. Genuinely well-equipped, but you're paying near-Baleno money.
  • Swift VXi / ZXi CNG - Makes sense above roughly 1,200 km a month. You lose meaningful boot space and about 12 bhp, but running cost drops to roughly ₹2.30 per km.

Best value pick: Swift VXi (O) MT

Engine, Performance and Driving Feel

The 1,197 cc Z12E three-cylinder makes 80.46 bhp and 111.7 Nm. On paper that's slightly less power than the outgoing four-cylinder, but the Swift weighs under 950 kg and the torque arrives lower in the rev range, so real-world response is quicker than the numbers suggest.

The five-speed manual remains one of the best gearboxes in any Indian budget car — short throws, light clutch, genuinely satisfying. The AMT is competent for traffic but takes the edge off what makes this car special.

The three-cylinder trade-off is honest: there's a perceptible thrum at idle and a coarser note above 4,000 rpm compared to the old K12. Once moving, it settles. Ride quality is on the firmer side, which pays off in corners and costs you over badly patched roads.

At 163 mm ground clearance, the Swift is lower than a Wagon R or Ignis. Loaded with four adults and luggage, steep ramps need care.

Interior, Features and Colours

The current cabin is the best a Swift has had. The dashboard is cleanly laid out with a floating 7-inch SmartPlay Pro touchscreen on ZXi and above, supporting wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay — still uncommon at this price. The 60:40 split rear seat and rear AC vents on higher trims add real practicality.

Material quality is a mixed bag: soft-touch elements on the upper dash, hard plastics lower down. Better than the Arena norm, not quite Baleno.

Maruti Swift colours: Sizzling Red, Splendid Silver, Magma Grey, Luster Blue, Pearl Arctic White and Pearl Midnight Black, with dual-tone black-roof options on Sizzling Red, Luster Blue and Arctic White. Sizzling Red is the signature Swift colour and holds resale demand best.

Maruti Swift Safety Rating

Standard across every variant: 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control (ESC), hill hold assist, ISOFIX child seat mounts, rear parking sensors, three-point seatbelts for all, and a seatbelt reminder system.

Now the part that requires precision, because most pages get this wrong.

The widely-quoted 1-star Global NCAP rating — 19.19 out of 34 for adult occupant protection and 16.68 out of 49 for child occupant protection — belongs to the third-generation Swift tested in 2022, which had only two airbags. That is not the car currently on sale.

The fourth-generation Swift has not been tested by Global NCAP or Bharat NCAP. The Japan-built version sold in Europe scored 3 stars in Euro NCAP (67% adult, 65% child) and 4 stars in Japan NCAP — but that car is manufactured in Japan and includes an ADAS suite the Indian model doesn't get, so those results don't transfer.

The honest position: six standard airbags plus ESC represent a real improvement over the tested car, but the India-built fourth-gen Swift's bodyshell performance is unverified by any independent Indian or global test. If a confirmed crash rating is your deciding factor, the Tata Altroz and Maruti's own Dzire (5-star Global NCAP) are the alternatives to compare.
